With traditional Irish dance rhythms as their common language, The Sole Mates present free-spirited choreography that celebrates the many moods and flavors of Irish dance.
“We have broad-ranging interests,” says Director Kieran Jordan, “from theatrical modern dance to old-style sean-nós Irish dance. Our musicians are the most expressive and soulful players I know. The play-on-words in our name refers to the ‘sole’ of the foot (in a dance form where the feet do most of the talking), plus the ‘soul’ of the performers themselves, and of the full dancing body in motion.”
“We honor our traditions and continue to probe them,” says Kieran. “There is an invigorating spirit to Irish music, and the desire to improvise, or to merge ideas stylistically, is irresistible!”
The Sole Mates’ work draws from previous collaboration among its members, from repertory pieces by Kieran Jordan, and from new works that are presently emerging in the group. Viewers can expect to see thoughtful choreography inspired by many core traditions in Irish dance, without being limited to one specific genre or another.
Grounded and expansive, joyful, zesty, heart-felt — The Sole Mates celebrate the lyricism, playfulness, and power of Irish music and dance.
